# How to Find Downloads on iPhone

**Quick answer:** downloaded files live in the **Files** app, not in Photos and not in Instagram or TikTok Saved.

1.  Open **Files**.
2.  Tap **Browse** (bottom bar).
3.  Open **iCloud Drive**, then **Downloads** — and also check **On My iPhone** → **Downloads**.
4.  Or, if you just finished a Safari download, tap the **Downloads** button next to the address bar, then open the file or jump to the folder.

## Where downloads actually live on iPhone

Safari does not keep a permanent Downloads library inside the browser alone. When a download finishes, the file is written to a **Downloads** folder in the Files app.

That folder can sit in two different places:

Open both **iCloud Drive** and **On My iPhone** before you assume the file is gone. People often check one location while Safari is saving to the other.

There is no system-wide “Downloads” icon on the Home Screen. The folder only appears under the storage location Safari is configured to use. If Files itself is missing from your Home Screen, swipe down and search for **Files**, then open Browse.

## Find a file you just downloaded in Safari

Right after a Safari download, the fastest path is still inside Safari:

1.  Open **Safari**.
2.  Tap the **Downloads** button beside the address / search field (down-arrow icon; labels can vary by iOS version).
3.  Tap the file to open it, or use the option that jumps to it in **Files**.

If the Downloads button is empty, the transfer may still be running, failed, or was saved to Photos (common for images). Check the Files paths above next.

Large files sometimes sit in the Safari Downloads list until the transfer fully finishes. If a row looks stuck, cancel and retry, or confirm the destination folder under Safari settings (next section) is a real, writable location.

## Change where Safari saves downloads

On current iPhone software (iOS 18+ style Settings), change the destination like this:

1.  Open **Settings**.
2.  Tap **Apps**, then **Safari**.
3.  Tap **Downloads**.
4.  Choose **iCloud Drive**, **On My iPhone**, or **Other**.

Older iOS builds put Safari higher in the main Settings list without the **Apps** grouping. The **Downloads** control is still under Safari either way — labels can vary slightly by version.

Pick **iCloud Drive** if you want the same Downloads folder on iPhone, iPad, and Mac. Pick **On My iPhone** if you want files only on this device and you do not want the download waiting on iCloud sync.

After you change the setting, new downloads go to the new location. Old files stay where they were saved, so check both folders when you are hunting something from last week.

## Photos vs Files: images often skip Downloads

Not every “download” is a Files download.

-   **Save Image** / long-press image saves usually go to **Photos** (Recents), not Files → Downloads.
-   Screenshots always go to **Photos**, never to the Downloads folder.
-   Explicit **Download Linked File** / document downloads usually go to **Files**.
-   Some sites offer both “view image” and “download PDF” — those land in different apps.

## Why the Downloads folder looks empty

Work this checklist in order:

1.  **Wrong storage location.** Check both **iCloud Drive → Downloads** and **On My iPhone → Downloads**.
2.  **Safari destination changed.** Open **Settings → Apps → Safari → Downloads** and note the current folder, then open that exact path in Files.
3.  **It was an image.** Look in **Photos → Recents**, not Files.
4.  **It was a social Save, not a download.** Open the original app’s Saved / Favorites list — Files will stay empty.
5.  **Download never finished.** Re-open Safari’s Downloads button; retry failed rows.
6.  **Different browser.** Chrome and other browsers do not always use Safari’s Downloads folder.
7.  **Custom “Other” folder.** If Safari Downloads is set to Other, open that folder path in Files Browse.
8.  **iCloud Drive still syncing.** Wait, toggle Airplane Mode off, and confirm you are signed into the same Apple Account.
9.  **Files search.** In Files, pull down to search by filename or file type (PDF, ZIP) across locations.
10.  **Recently Deleted / wrong account.** Less common for Files than Photos, but confirm you are not looking at a freshly erased folder or a different iCloud account on a shared device.

Keep using Files and Safari for real downloads. That is the correct native answer.
