You bookmarked a restaurant Reel three weeks ago. Today you open your Saved tab and the thumbnail is gone — the creator deleted the video, and your save vanished with it. No notification. How to save Instagram Reels before they get deleted
The iPhone share sheet works on any Instagram post, Reel, or Story. If the creator later deletes the Reel, the extracted information stays in your library.

The backup workflow
- Save the post on Instagram as usual. Tap the bookmark icon. This keeps it in your Instagram Saved tab for browsing.

The key shift is timing: back up the Reel at the moment you bookmark it, not after you realize it disappeared. Why Instagram bookmarks break as a save system

- The creator deletes the post. Grid cleanup, rebrands, and post regret are common. Your save goes with the post.
- Instagram removes it. Policy violations, copyright claims, and spam enforcement pull content daily.
- The account goes private or gets deactivated. If you do not follow the creator's now-private account, the save becomes inaccessible.
Instagram sends no notification in any of these cases. If you have 200 bookmarks and a few of them vanished last week, you would not know unless you scrolled through the entire Saved tab looking for them.
How backup methods compare

Screenshots survive deletion but lose the source link, caption text, and place or product names. They are flat images in your camera roll, unsearchable by content. Copying a link to Notes is worse — if the post gets deleted, the link is dead.
Which saves are worth backing up
You do not need to back up every Instagram bookmark. A meme you bookmarked for a group chat does not need preservation. The saves worth backing up are the ones tied to a future action:
- Recipes you plan to cook — especially from creators who post and delete frequently
- Restaurant and cafe Reels you want to visit — location details and names are extracted and visible on a map
- Product reviews you want to compare before buying
- Outfit and styling references you plan to recreate or show a stylist
- Travel recommendations you are collecting for an upcoming trip
- Tutorials you want to follow later — workout routines, makeup techniques, home projects
The test is simple: if you would be frustrated to lose this save in two weeks, it is worth two extra taps now.
What about backing up existing saves
If you already have hundreds of Instagram bookmarks you have never backed up, there is no bulk export that preserves content. The practical approach — and it does take time — is to go through your Saved tab and share the most important ones to Tote. Start with saves tied to upcoming plans: trip restaurant lists, recipes for this week, products you are actively comparing.
Instagram's Download Your Information tool lets you request an account data export, but the saved-posts section contains only links to the original posts. If a post was deleted before the export, the link leads nowhere. The export is a list of references with the same fragility as the Saved tab itself.
