The best way to use AI for trip planning is to give it a real brief and real source material. Tell it your dates, budget, pace, and priorities. Then let it work from places you actually saved instead of asking it to invent an itinerary from scratch.
Tote connects that saved research to ChatGPT, Claude, and other compatible AI clients. The AI can search your Totes, open the useful details, compare options, and collect the places you approve into a trip list.
Why generic AI trip plans fall short
A chatbot can produce a polished itinerary from a destination and a few dates. That does not mean the plan reflects your taste. It may ignore the small restaurant you saved from a Reel, the hotel your friend recommended, or the museum article you kept for later.
Starting with your own saves changes the job. The AI is no longer guessing what you might like. It is helping you choose, group, and schedule ideas that already earned your attention.
How to plan a trip with AI and Tote
- Save the raw material. Keep promising restaurants, hotels, neighborhoods, guides, events, and travel tips in Tote as you find them.
- Connect Tote to your AI client. Follow the Tote connection guide and grant read access. Grant write access only if you want the client to organize the result in Tote.
- Give the AI your constraints. Include dates, budget, pace, who is traveling, accessibility needs, fixed bookings, and the experiences you care about most.
- Ask it to search Tote first. Tell the AI to use the places and advice you saved before it recommends anything new.
- Review before organizing. Check the shortlist and itinerary. Once it looks right, ask the AI to create a trip list and add only the Totes you approved.
Copy this AI trip planning prompt
Replace Tokyo with your destination. The prompt asks for the missing constraints before the AI starts arranging your days.
Use Tote to find the places, restaurants, hotels, and travel tips I saved for Tokyo. Ask me for my dates, budget, pace, and must-do items. Then group the strongest options by neighborhood and draft a realistic day-by-day itinerary. Flag opening hours, travel times, prices, or booking details that need current verification. After I approve the shortlist, create a Tote list called Tokyo Shortlist and add only the Totes I chose. What happens when you use this prompt
The AI searches your Tote account for relevant travel saves and opens the details it needs. It can compare the places, group nearby options, and draft the itinerary in the conversation. With write access, it can create a trip list and add the Totes you select.
The original links, locations, notes, and other saved context stay attached to their Totes. You can return to the source instead of trusting a summary with no trail back.
Ask the AI to verify details that change
Opening hours, prices, transit times, visa rules, reservation policies, and seasonal closures change. Tote provides the information you saved, which may be old. If your AI client has web access, ask it to verify those details against current sources and show which facts it checked.
Keep bookings and hard commitments in the service responsible for them. Tote does not buy tickets, make reservations, or add events directly to Apple Calendar or Google Calendar.
Useful follow-up prompts
Make the itinerary more realistic
Check this itinerary for backtracking, rushed meals, long transit legs, and too many fixed activities in one day. Keep my must-do places, then explain every change you make.Compare two versions of the trip
Use my saved Totes to make two versions of this trip: one slower and neighborhood-focused, and one that covers more of my shortlist. Show what I gain and give up with each version.Find the gaps in your research
Review the trip plan and tell me what still needs research or booking. Separate facts you can verify with current web sources from decisions that depend on my preference. What Tote adds to an AI trip planning workflow
- Your own saved restaurants, hotels, places, links, and notes
- Semantic search when you remember the idea but not the title
- A direct path back to the source behind each suggestion
- Lists that keep the approved shortlist together after the chat ends
If your travel research is still scattered across screenshots, Reels, TikToks, and Safari tabs, start with the guide to turning saved links and screenshots into a trip shortlist. Then connect Tote when you are ready to reason over the full set.
Questions about planning a trip with AI
Can AI plan an entire trip for me?
AI can draft a useful shortlist and itinerary, but you should verify current logistics and make the final choices. It cannot know your taste as well as the places and advice you deliberately saved.
Does Tote choose places for the itinerary?
Tote supplies your saved places and their context. The connected AI compares them and proposes the plan. If the AI searches the web for new places, those recommendations come from the AI client, not Tote.
Can the AI change my Tote account?
Only if you grant write access. A read-only connection can search your Totes and draft the itinerary in chat. Write access lets it create and edit lists, add or remove Totes, and make other supported changes.
Can Tote book flights or restaurants?
No. Tote works with your saved Totes and lists. Use airline, booking, restaurant, map, and calendar services for reservations and time-sensitive trip details.
