You favorited a recipe video three months ago. A product review you wanted to try. A travel hack for your next trip. Today you open your TikTok Favorites tab and some of them are gone. The creators deleted their videos, and your favorites vanished with them — no notification, no record of what they contained.
TikTok removed 184 million videos globally in Q1 2026, with 178 million caught by automated systems before anyone reported them. Every removal silently deletes the video from every user's Favorites tab. There is no undo and no archive.
The fix is backing up the favorites that matter before they disappear. How TikTok favorites actually work
TikTok Favorites are references to the original video, not copies. When you tap the bookmark icon on a video, TikTok saves a pointer to that video in your Favorites tab. The video itself stays on the creator's profile under TikTok's control.
Three things can remove a favorite without your input:
- The creator deletes the video. The favorite disappears from your tab immediately.
- TikTok removes the video for a policy violation. Automated systems caught 178 million videos in Q1 2026 alone.
- The creator sets the video to private or friends-only. Your favorite becomes inaccessible.
In every case, the video disappears with no notification. With roughly 1.9 billion monthly active users generating content that can be removed at any time, deletions happen steadily and unpredictably.
What TikTok data export actually gives you
TikTok offers a full data export through Settings > Privacy > Download Your Data. The export includes your favorites as a list of video URLs and basic metadata in TXT or JSON format.
The limitations are significant:
- Processing takes one to four days, and the download link expires four days after it becomes available.
- The export contains video URLs, not video files. If a video was deleted before or after the export, the link leads nowhere.
- Captions, recipe details, product names, and other useful content from the video are not included — only the URL and basic metadata.
A data export is a one-time snapshot, not an ongoing backup. It does not solve the problem of favorites disappearing silently between exports.
Why TikTok Favorites are hard to find
The deletion problem is compounded by the search problem. TikTok's Favorites tab has no search bar. You can browse Collections — named folders you create manually — but there is no keyword search within them either. If you saved 300 videos and want the one about a chicken marinade, your only option is scrolling thumbnails. TikTok's main search bar searches all public content, not your personal favorites.
How to back up TikTok favorites on iPhone
The backup workflow captures the useful content from a TikTok at the moment you favorite it, so the information survives even if the video is later deleted.
- Find the TikTok you want to keep. This works for videos in your Favorites tab, your For You Page, or any creator's profile.
- Tap the share arrow and select Tote. The share sheet works from any screen in TikTok.
- Tote extracts the caption, creator, and content details. Recipe names, product brands, place names, hashtags, and any linked content become searchable text in your Tote library.
- Search later by keyword. Type “chicken marinade” or “sunscreen review” or the creator's name. The save appears alongside your other saves from Instagram, Safari, screenshots, and every other app.
This is a forward-only workflow. Tote does not retroactively scan your existing Favorites tab or import favorites in bulk. You share the videos worth keeping as you favorite them or as you scroll through your current favorites.
One limitation to be honest about: Tote extracts text from captions and metadata, not from the video itself. If a recipe creator shows ingredients on screen but does not list them in the caption, those details will not be captured. The backup works best for TikToks where the useful information appears in the caption, hashtags, or linked content — which covers most product reviews, place recommendations, and recipe posts that include written instructions.
Building the habit
Adding a share step after every bookmark is extra friction, and not every favorite is worth it. A practical approach: share only the TikToks you would actually search for later. If you have an iPhone 15 Pro or later, the Action Button can speed up the share step to a single press.

Which favorites are worth backing up
Not every favorited TikTok needs a backup. The test: will you need to find this information weeks from now, and would it matter if the video disappeared? Share the ones with useful content you would want to retrieve later. Let the rest stay as regular favorites.
Common high-value favorites to back up:
- Recipes and cooking techniques — dish names, ingredient lists, and cooking methods from the caption
- Product reviews and recommendations — brand names, prices, and the creator's verdict
- Places and restaurants — venue names, cities, and neighborhood details
- How-to tutorials — step-by-step instructions, tools, and supply lists
- Travel tips and itineraries — destinations, logistics, and local advice
Using backed-up TikToks alongside other saves
Once a TikTok is shared to Tote, it becomes a save that sits alongside Instagram Reels, Safari links, screenshots, and saves from every other app. A search for “chicken recipe” returns the TikTok recipe alongside the Instagram Reel and the Safari recipe page.
