The six reader types

Every result comes with three books to start with. Read through them all if you want more ideas.

The Page-Turner

You read for the twist, and you read it in one sitting.

You like short chapters, unreliable narrators, and an ending you did not see coming. Start with these thrillers.

Thrillers to read next

  • The Silent Patient (Alex Michaelides · 2019). A painter stops speaking after a murder, and her therapist needs to know why. The last chapters reframe the whole book.
  • Gone Girl (Gillian Flynn · 2012). A marriage told from both sides, and neither side is telling the truth.
  • The Housemaid (Freida McFadden · 2022). A live-in job that seems too good to be true. One of the most talked-about thrillers on BookTok.

The Swoon Seeker

You read for the slow burn and the payoff.

Banter, yearning, and a happy ending you earned. You would read a romance in a fantasy kingdom as happily as one in a beach town.

Romances to read next

  • Beach Read (Emily Henry · 2020). Two rival writers swap genres for a summer. Funny, sad, and very swoony.
  • Fourth Wing (Rebecca Yarros · 2023). Romantasy with dragons, a deadly war college, and a famous enemies-to-lovers arc.
  • The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo (Taylor Jenkins Reid · 2017). An old Hollywood star finally tells the truth about the love of her life.

The World Builder

You want a world big enough to get lost in.

Maps, magic systems, and science that almost works. You read fantasy and science fiction for the scale and stay for the characters.

Fantasy and sci-fi to read next

  • Project Hail Mary (Andy Weir · 2021). A lone astronaut has to save Earth with science, and an unlikely friend.
  • The Name of the Wind (Patrick Rothfuss · 2007). A legendary wizard tells his own story, starting from nothing.
  • Piranesi (Susanna Clarke · 2020). A man lives alone in an endless house of statues and tides. Short and strange, and you will think about it for weeks.

The Deep Feeler

You want a book that stays with you for weeks.

You care about sentences and people more than plot. Literary fiction that breaks your heart a little is your sweet spot.

Literary fiction to read next

  • Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow (Gabrielle Zevin · 2022). Two friends make video games together for thirty years. It is about love, work, and loss.
  • Normal People (Sally Rooney · 2018). Two people keep finding their way back to each other from school to college.
  • Pachinko (Min Jin Lee · 2017). Four generations of a Korean family in Japan. Big, patient, and moving.

The Curious Mind

You read to understand how the world works.

True stories, big ideas, and facts you repeat at dinner. Nonfiction that reads like a novel is your favorite kind.

Nonfiction to read next

  • Sapiens (Yuval Noah Harari · 2014). A brisk history of humankind, from the first humans to today.
  • Educated (Tara Westover · 2018). A memoir about growing up in a survivalist family in Idaho with no schooling, then teaching herself enough to get to college and, later, a PhD from Cambridge.
  • The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks (Rebecca Skloot · 2010). The woman behind one of medicine's most important cell lines, and her family's story.

The Cozy Escapist

You read to feel better, and that is a great reason.

Found family, low stakes, and kindness. You want a book that feels like a warm drink.

Cozy books to read next

  • Legends & Lattes (Travis Baldree · 2022). An orc mercenary retires to open a coffee shop. Exactly as cozy as it sounds.
  • The House in the Cerulean Sea (TJ Klune · 2020). A caseworker visits an island orphanage for magical children and finds a family.
  • Remarkably Bright Creatures (Shelby Van Pelt · 2022). A widow working night shifts at an aquarium becomes friends with a very clever octopus.

Questions about this quiz

What the quiz does, what it does not know, and what to do with your result.

How does the book quiz pick my books?+

Each answer adds points to one or two of six reader types: thrillers, romance, fantasy and sci-fi, literary fiction, nonfiction, and cozy reads. Your highest type wins, and you get three well-loved books from that genre. When you name books for sharper picks, Tote compares them with a 200-book catalog.

Is this book quiz free?+

Yes. The book quiz is free with no sign-up or email. Your quiz answers stay in the browser; the titles you name for sharper picks are sent to our server and, when Jev is connected, through OpenRouter to TypeSafe AI to score titles, and they are not stored. Retake it whenever your reading mood changes.

What if I read more than one genre?+

Most readers do. The quiz picks your strongest type right now. Retake it on a different day, or check the other five types below to see which books sound good.

How do I keep track of books I want to read?+

Keep one To Read list that every recommendation goes into, whether it came from a friend, BookTok, or a bookstore table. On iPhone, Tote saves TikToks, Instagram posts, links, and screenshots of book covers, and picks out the book and author so you can search for them later.

Where do the book picks come from?+

Tote chose them by hand. Each one is widely read and a strong example of its genre, from BookTok favorites like Fourth Wing and The Housemaid to classics like Gone Girl.

Never lose a book recommendation again

Tote keeps the BookTok videos, screenshots, and links that make up your To Read list in one searchable place on iPhone.
